WEDNESDAY NIGHT COMEDY

The Avenue | 18 September | 7:30pm

One of the best-respected in the country, Pinder Award winner, featured on The Project, ABC, MICF Galas and JFL, Damien Power is bringing some of best new material to Wednesday Night Comedy at The Avenue! We’ve talked the incredibly funny, nation-wide sell out Ellen Briggs (Women Like Us, Hughesy We Have a Problem) hosting the show – give us a call and book your table: (07) 5592 1678.

Three-time Barry nominee Damien Power is widely regarded as the most exhilarating voice on the Australian comedy circuit. After just a handful of years playing festivals, he’s racked up a number of awards, nominations and rave reviews, as well as selling out rooms across the country. Damien toured his raw, assured I Can’t Believe I Cared to audiences around Australia and the world in 2015. He took the 2016 festival scene by storm with Sell Mum Into Slavery, and was filmed as part of ABC-TV’s Next Gen series. Damien is also a member of the “True Australian Patriots” – winners of the Director’s Choice award at the 2016 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. He stars in fellow True Australian Patriot performer Anne Edmonds’ new show for ABC iView, The Edge Of The Bush, had his own segment – “Power to the People” – on The Project and featured in the ABC series Fancy Boy. The 2017 Melbourne Comedy Festival saw Damien nominated for the Barry award for Best Show for the third time in as many years, and win the Pinder Prize, a grant named in honour of legendary comedy impresario John Pinder, with his show “Utopia: Live in 3D”. This year saw his show ‘Man Puts His Dreams in a Sock’ all over the country.

Ellen Briggs is one of the sharpest comedians working. Outrageously funny, Ellen puts into words what most can't and what even more wouldn't dare - her stories and observations are always entertaining and always on point. She's bagged first prize on Foxtel's 'Be a Comedian', earning her a spot on Stand Up Australia, she was a national finalist in the 2007 MICF Raw Competition. She's performed with some of the country's best acts, Bob Downe, Mick Meredith, Will Anderson, Peter Hellier, Charlie Pickering, Fiona O'Loughlin, Kinne, Sean Chulburra, Gina Yashire, Puppetry of the Penis, Jimbo, Mandy Nolan, Brad Oakes, Julia Wilson, Greg Sullivan, and Claire Hooper. She's one of our favourites and we know you're going to love her too.

Comedy in the back room at The Avenue is a Wednesday night staple in Surfers Paradise – every week from 7:30pm! With huge lineups and some of the best comedians from around the country and abroad, prepare your laughing gear to see some of the best from around the country and around the world. WEDNESDAY NIGHT COMEDY

The Avenue | 11 September | 7:30pm

Danielle Walker (Get Krack!n, ABC’s Comedy Up Late) is an award-winning, internationally touring comic originally from the bush, this week joining us from Melbourne as your headline act for Wednesday Night Comedy at The Avenue! Triple J’s Ciaran Lyons is with us from Sydney hosting a gut-buster line up – give us a call and book your table: (07) 5592 1678.

Danielle Walker is a strange, if not perhaps slightly deranged girl known for her dark and twisted everyday observations and stories. Moving from Townsville to Melbourne in 2015, Danielle started gigging and honing her craft and it was in early 2016 that she took out the prize in Australia’s biggest open mic competition and was named Raw Comedy National Champion. Since then, Danielle has been handpicked by the Melbourne International Comedy Festival to be part of ‘The Comedy Zone’ a line-up show in the festival of the 5 best new comedians from around Australia and has gone on to appear on Comedy Up Late and Stand and Deliver, both for the ABC. Danielle recently appeared as ‘Ranger Danny’ alongside stars Kate McLennan and Kate McCartney on the show everyone is talking about – Get Krack!n for ABC TV . In 2017 she was also invited to perform at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Just for Laughs festival, where her set was be filmed for a special to broadcast on The Comedy Channel. Danielle’s first hour long stand up show Bush Rat won her the Best Newcomer Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2018.  Winning this prestigious award will see Danielle take her show to the Soho Theatre in London’s West End later in the year.

“Insane pay-offs, delivered with the unhinged laugh a Batman villain would be proud of.” – Chortle

At only 21  years old, Ciaran Lyons is one of Australia’s fastest rising comedians. Since winning the 2013 Perth Comedy Festival Next Gen Comedian award, he has gone on to regularly perform sold out shows at comedy clubs all over the country, opening for big name comics such as Akmal, Lawrence Mooney, Nazeem Hussain Sammy J & Randy. Building on this momentum, Ciaran was voted by The Sunday Times as one of WA's Hottest 100 People of 2016 (alongside the likes of Tame Impala, Troye Sivan and Danny Green), is a presenter on national youth station Triple J, and has regularly appeared as a Metro Whip Presenter for Network Ten’s The Project. His selection for the 2015 Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Comedy Zone – showcasing five of Australia’s best new comedians led to a string of sold out solo shows across Australia, and appearances at prestigious events such as ABC Comedy Bites Gala, Splendour in the Grass "Wil Anderson and Friends", Comedy Under the Stars and Triple J’s Good Az Friday.

Winner of the MICF Best Newcomer 2019, Blake Freeman is a killer act! He’s been touring all over the country, but this week he is with us as your headline for Wednesday Night Comedy. Fresh back from Edinburgh Fringe, the UK’s Dan Willis hosts the show from 7:30pm! Book your table: (07) 5592 1678.

Blake Freeman is one of Australia’s brightest new comedians, making a name for himself with his own brand of energetic and disarmingly honest comedy. Through his youthful energy and charismatic delivery Blake weaves charming stories, making the intensely personal relatable. In 2018 he was hand-picked for Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s prestigious Comedy Zone and appeared on ABC TV's Comedy Up Late series, toured nationally and hosted his own radio show. 2019 is proving to be a breakthrough year for Blake – His debut stand up show 'There's Something There'  was nominated for, and won, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s award for ‘Best Newcomer’, had a sell-out season at both the Brisbane and Sydney Comedy Festivals, and travels to the acclaimed Soho Theatre in London’s West End.

"This guy is live and direct and has the easy, candid demeanour of a man born to be a comedian."  - Herald Sun 2019

“Funny, likeable... spins a yarn with air.” — Adelaide Advertiser

★★★★½ Herald Sun 2019

In 2002 after winning the Time-Out Competition to be a Perrier judge at the Edinburgh festival, Dan Willis made the move from computer programmer to full time comedian.  The IT crash also made this move slightly easier, if not essential- you’ve got to see the funny side of things after all. Willis performed in Edinburgh for the first time in 2002 with the Amused Moose Hot Starlets, a showcase of comedians including Greg Davies, Matthew Osborn, Nina Conti, Rhod Gilbert and fellow North-Easterner Patrick Monaghan. Now, after over 2000 gigs in 11 different countries, including TV appearances in the UK and Australia. Willis performs in all major comedy clubs as a headline act or MC (Comedy Store, Jongleurs, Comedy Central, etc), and International festivals throughout the globe performing solo shows (New Zealand and Melbourne Comedy Festivals, Adelaide and Edinburgh Fringes to name but a few).

WEDNESDAY NIGHT COMEDY

The Avenue | 28 August | 7:30pm

From Have You Been Paying Attention?, Hughesy We Have a Problem, MICF Galas – the award winning Georgie Carroll headlines Wednesday Night Comedy! ABC Radio’s Kat Davidson is hosting an undeniably hilarious show at The Avenue this week. Book your table: (07) 5592 1678.

Born and raised in Manchester, England; now a proud Australian. Georgie Carroll is a Comedian, Nurse, Wife and Mother. This combination of Nationalities, home life and hospital has provided a 24/7 training ground that has nurtured Georgie’s naturally funny bones. Her bluntness and charm coupled with razor-sharp wit, give her a broad-spectrum appeal that can be put into any room, with any line-up, and shine. Georgie took out ‘Most Prolific Writer’, ‘People’s Choice’ and ‘Comedian of the Year’ in Adelaide Comedy Awards. Her debut festival hour ‘Nurse Case Scenario’ was nominated for ‘Best Emerging Comedy’ at Adelaide Fringe and ‘Best Comedy’ at Perth Fringe World. Her follow up show ‘Gauze and Affect’ is undoubtedly Georgie’s strongest hour to date. Collectively the shows have sold out internationally, with ‘Gauze and Affect’ breaking record attendance numbers for her venue at Gluttony (Adelaide Fringe 2017). Georgie has been blowing the roof off the Australian Comedy Club circuit since 2012, fine tuning her talent to become the world class comic, MC and writer she now is. Georgie has now embarked on a TV career, starting at the very top as a regular panellist on Channel 10’s “Have You Been Paying Attention?” and has appeared on Channel 10’s “Hughesy, We Have A Problem” and ABC’s “Melbourne Comedy Festival 2019 Oxfam Gala”.

“Georgie Carroll just can’t seem to help herself, she ends up making the world a better place no matter what she does and she’s damn funny doing it.” - Scenestr

Seeing Kat on stage is like visiting an old friend you haven't met yet. She's shared the stage with the world's best comics (Stephen K Amos, Steven Wright, Dave Hughes to shamelessly name drop a few), tamed a shed full of drunk miners, kept a 17 year marriage off the rocks and is currently being parented by her five year old. She tackles relationships, observations and random events with equal passion and her unique storytelling ability takes her audience along with her for the ride. Kat has been a professional improviser since 1993, hosted Gala Events and worked a crowd from the back of a cattle truck. She can be heard regularly across Queensland ABC radio and has headlined the best clubs in Australia and Canada. She is also the co-producer of the highly successful Ladies Comedy Nights in Brisbane, can regularly be found at sea performing for huge crowds on P&O Cruise ships and enjoyed sell out seasons of her original show Untidy at the 2012 Brisbane Comedy Festival and husband and wife co-production He Said, She Said (with husband Stav Davidson) at Wonderland Festival, venues around Brisbane and P&O ships since 2016.
