WEDNESDAY NIGHT COMEDY

The Avenue | 28 August | 7:30pm

From Have You Been Paying Attention?, Hughesy We Have a Problem, MICF Galas – the award winning Georgie Carroll headlines Wednesday Night Comedy! ABC Radio’s Kat Davidson is hosting an undeniably hilarious show at The Avenue this week. Book your table: (07) 5592 1678.

Born and raised in Manchester, England; now a proud Australian. Georgie Carroll is a Comedian, Nurse, Wife and Mother. This combination of Nationalities, home life and hospital has provided a 24/7 training ground that has nurtured Georgie’s naturally funny bones. Her bluntness and charm coupled with razor-sharp wit, give her a broad-spectrum appeal that can be put into any room, with any line-up, and shine. Georgie took out ‘Most Prolific Writer’, ‘People’s Choice’ and ‘Comedian of the Year’ in Adelaide Comedy Awards. Her debut festival hour ‘Nurse Case Scenario’ was nominated for ‘Best Emerging Comedy’ at Adelaide Fringe and ‘Best Comedy’ at Perth Fringe World. Her follow up show ‘Gauze and Affect’ is undoubtedly Georgie’s strongest hour to date. Collectively the shows have sold out internationally, with ‘Gauze and Affect’ breaking record attendance numbers for her venue at Gluttony (Adelaide Fringe 2017). Georgie has been blowing the roof off the Australian Comedy Club circuit since 2012, fine tuning her talent to become the world class comic, MC and writer she now is. Georgie has now embarked on a TV career, starting at the very top as a regular panellist on Channel 10’s “Have You Been Paying Attention?” and has appeared on Channel 10’s “Hughesy, We Have A Problem” and ABC’s “Melbourne Comedy Festival 2019 Oxfam Gala”.

“Georgie Carroll just can’t seem to help herself, she ends up making the world a better place no matter what she does and she’s damn funny doing it.” - Scenestr

“infectiously funny” The Age

Seeing Kat on stage is like visiting an old friend you haven't met yet. She's shared the stage with the world's best comics (Stephen K Amos, Steven Wright, Dave Hughes to shamelessly name drop a few), tamed a shed full of drunk miners, kept a 17 year marriage off the rocks and is currently being parented by her five year old. She tackles relationships, observations and random events with equal passion and her unique storytelling ability takes her audience along with her for the ride. Kat has been a professional improviser since 1993, hosted Gala Events and worked a crowd from the back of a cattle truck. She can be heard regularly across Queensland ABC radio and has headlined the best clubs in Australia and Canada. She is also the co-producer of the highly successful Ladies Comedy Nights in Brisbane, can regularly be found at sea performing for huge crowds on P&O Cruise ships and enjoyed sell out seasons of her original show Untidy at the 2012 Brisbane Comedy Festival and husband and wife co-production He Said, She Said (with husband Stav Davidson) at Wonderland Festival, venues around Brisbane and P&O ships since 2016.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT COMEDY

The Avenue | 14 August | 7:30pm

Award winning comedian from MICF Comedy Galas and actor from Please Like Me & Rosehaven, David Quirk is with us as your headline act for Wednesday Night Comedy at The Avenue! Hosting the show we’ve nabbed Nova’s Shad Wicka for a gut-buster night of laughs for you in Surfers. Book your table: (07) 5592 1678.

Melbourne-based stand-up comedian and actor David Quirk is a regular and wholly original presence on the Australian and international comedy circuit. Quirk had great success in 2013 with his stand-out show Shaking Hands With Danger which took out Melbourne Comedy Festival's coveted peer award for Best Show – The Piece of Wood Award. The show also ran successful seasons in both London and Edinburgh. His follow up, Career, Suicide in 2014, also garnered great reviews and consolidated David's place as one of our most interesting, honest and challenging standups. In 2015 David premiered his eagerly awaited show Thrasher at Melbourne Comedy Festival – a site specific show performed in the actual skateboard shop where he has worked for most of his adult life. He followed this up with Approaching Perfection in 2016, a unanimous four star show that toured the country and the UK. "His observations are revealing, his realisations endearing – Quirk is a comic not to be missed." The Skinny (UK). David also starred with Sam Simmons in the ABC TV series Problems, appeared in ABC1's Sammy J & Randy in Ricketts Lane, and as Josh Thomas' love interest on Please Like Me. Most recently he played the awkward but oddly lovely character of Damian in Celia Pacquola and Luke Mcgreggor's acclaimed Tasmanian ABC series Rosehaven.

A feature on radio for the and regular on stages across Queensland. Shad annoys Brisbane every weekend on Nova 1069 and on his Just Another Mug With a Podcast. But you'll want to catch him on stage using that cynicism and wit that gets him in more trouble than it should. A few festival shows and no awards. But who needs them? He's got jokes and they're alright.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT COMEDY

The Avenue | 7 August | 7:30pm

From JFL, ABC’s Comedy Up Late, MICF Galas and sold out shows internationally, Luke Heggie joins us to headline Wednesday Night Comedy at The Avenue! Ellen Briggs, one of the funniest in the country joins us to host and we are bringing a banger night of laughs to you in Surfers. Book your table: (07) 5592 1678.

Luke Heggie started stand up comedy in 2010. Since then he has toured Australia and abroad, performed at the Sydney Opera House for Just for Laughs, and in support of Stephen Merchant, and sold out festivals across Australia. He has written and performed 5 solo shows since 2012 at festivals across Australia and New Zealand. Luke won RAW Comedy in 2010, Time Out Sydney's Best Comedian in 2012, and Sydney Comedy Festival's Director's Choice Award in 2015. In 2016 he was featured on ABC's 2016 Comedy Next Gen and his show Rough Diamanté has been toured around the country and internationally in the UK. He is fast becoming one of Australia's most in demand and recognisable stand up comics. 2017 has seen Luke perform Rough Diamanté to crowds across the Australian Festival circuit. Punters and fellow comedians can't get enough of his harsh but fair shows about idiots and he was quick to sell out every show and rightfully awarded the Comedian's Choice Award in Melbourne (AKA Piece of Wood). Luke then went onto make his London debut with a 1 week run of Rough Diamanté in August at the popular Soho Theatre.

"... a unique, powerful, and insightful Australian comic voice.." Sydney Morning Herald

"...Deadpan genius... one of the funniest standups around." Sydney Morning Herald

Ellen Briggs is one of the sharpest comedians working. Outrageously funny, Ellen puts into words what most can't and what even more wouldn't dare - her stories and observations are always entertaining and always on point. She's bagged first prize on Foxtel's 'Be a Comedian', earning her a spot on Stand Up Australia, she was a national finalist in the 2007 MICF Raw Competition. She's performed with some of the country's best acts, Bob Downe, Mick Meredith, Will Anderson, Peter Hellier, Charlie Pickering, Fiona O'Loughlin, Kinne, Sean Chulburra, Gina Yashire, Puppetry of the Penis, Jimbo, Mandy Nolan, Brad Oakes, Julia Wilson, Greg Sullivan, and Claire Hooper. WEDNESDAY NIGHT COMEDY

The Avenue | 31 July | 7:30pm

Is Daniel Townes Australia’s best joke writer? Probably. Is he headlining Wednesday Night Comedy at The Avenue? Definitely. Check out one of the funniest touring this Wednesday in the Back Room, hosted by Terry Hansen - don’t miss out on the funniest night in Surfers, book your table: (07) 5592 1678.

Laconic and dry-witted with a warm onstage charisma, Daniel Townes’ shows are packed with sharp one-liners, savage social commentary and dark-but-hilarious tales of his own failings. Society’s shortcomings and foibles — from the big questions of life through to the petty grievances of day to day existence — are neatly excised by his sharp, razor-edged wit and rapid-fire delivery, guaranteeing a ferocious hit rate of punchlines-per-minute. Townes pours 16 years of experience onstage into his dry, intelligent and brilliantly relatable comedy, with a laid-back charm that makes entertaining a room full of strangers look easy. With a knack for uncovering universal truths and packaging them with punchlines that relate to everyone, by the end of the show you’ll feel like you’ve known him for years. He’s an annual regular at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Sydney Comedy Festival. He has performed at the prestigious invite-only Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal, and won fans worldwide, headlining comedy clubs throughout the UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, Germany, Spain, Ireland, South Africa, Canada, The Netherlands, the UAE, Qatar, and all over Australia. His hour long special for Comedy Next Gen (ABC Comedy) in 2018 was one of their most popular for the season. He has also performed on Comedy Up Late (ABC Comedy), The Stand Up Series (Just For Laughs Sydney, Comedy Channel), Good News Week (Ch 10), Stand Up Australia (Comedy Channel), The Footy Show (Ch 9), Stand Up (ABC), and had numerous appearances on Cracker Night, The Sydney Comedy Festival Gala (Comedy Channel).

Terry Hansen is one of the fastest in stand up comedy. With 30 years of comedy experience under his belt and 15 years on Brisbane radio on 973fm as Bianca, Terry and Bob, Terry has been an absolute gun in Australian comedy for longer than nearly anybody else. How has Terry worked with the Biggest Names in Australian Stand-up without ever becoming one of them?! Because Terry works exclusively on the circuit as a rapid fire comedian!

In 2002 after winning the Time-Out Competition to be a Perrier judge at the Edinburgh festival, Dan Willis made the move from computer programmer to full time comedian.  The IT crash also made this move slightly easier, if not essential- you’ve got to see the funny side of things after all. Willis performed in Edinburgh for the first time in 2002 with the Amused Moose Hot Starlets, a showcase of comedians including Greg Davies, Matthew Osborn, Nina Conti, Rhod Gilbert and fellow North-Easterner Patrick Monaghan. Now, after over 2000 gigs in 11 different countries, including TV appearances in the UK and Australia. Willis performs in all major comedy clubs as a headline act or MC (Comedy Store, Jongleurs, Comedy Central, etc), and International festivals throughout the globe performing solo shows (New Zealand and Melbourne Comedy Festivals, Adelaide and Edinburgh Fringes to name but a few).

WEDNESDAY NIGHT COMEDY

The Avenue | 1 May | 7:30pm

Nicky Wilkinson joins us from the UK to host a hilarious night of laughs out in Surfers. Book a table before we fill up - (07) 5592 1678.

One of Australia’s busiest comedians, Mick is just as comfortable on-stage at the biggest comedy clubs in the city, and the smallest venues and sporting clubs in the country. His material is observant, sharp and satirical, highlighting the foibles of modern life in a likeable and relatable fashion.  It’s intelligent, hilarious and sometimes political, delivered with high-energy and a never-ending stream of punchlines that continually take his jokes to the next level. A regular guest on ABC Grandstand and Melbourne’s 1116 SEN radio, Mick has also appeared on The Circle (See Mick on The Circle) and Hey Hey It’s Saturday (Channel 9).  He’s travelled to entertain Aussie troops serving overseas and appeared in his own solo shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and The Adelaide Fringe.

Nicky Wilkinson is an actress and comedian from the UK. She reached the final of two prestigious 'New Act' comedy competitions in 2013; So You Think You're Funny and New Act of the Year. She now gigs both in the UK and internationally as a solo act, and as one half of multi award-winning physical comedy duo, The Kagools. Wilkinson is bright and quick-witted. Her warm, likeable, down-to-earth style instantly puts audiences at ease; as ready and eager to laugh as they would be sharing a great joke with a friend. Her comedy mixes charming, real-life anecdotes with just the right dose of self-deprecation and often brilliantly funny improvised riffs with the crowd.

A live performer since childhood, this joke of a man honed his stand up skills in the legendary Toronto comedy scene and has refined them on stages throughout the galaxy.
